Who has HIV & AIDS?

According to the CDC in 2000, 13 - 24 year olds are at the greatest risk for HIV and AIDS, primarily related to sexual activity.   Young males who have sex with other males have the greatest risk of exposure to the HIV, although many males and females are infected through heterosexual contact. African Americans were the most heavily infected in this most recent study although Caucasian and Hispanic infection rates continue to increase.  Only about 14% of the reported cases were traced to intravenous drug use.

How many people have HIV & AIDS?

The CDC estimates that between 800,000 and 900,000 people are living with HIV in the United States. One third of these individuals are unaware of their infection! The National Institute of Infectious Diseases estimate that approximately 36.1 million people in 2000 are living with HIV/AIDS worldwide and 47% of these are women.  21.8 million have died so far.   Half of all new infections in the US occur in people under the age of 25.  HIV infection is the 6th leading cause of death in people 15-24 years old and the 5th leading cause of death in people 25-44 years old.

Through June 2000 a total of 438,795 deaths had been reported in the US related to HIV/AIDS with 143,593 of these deaths under the age of 34.
